Edward Henry Whinfield (1836-1922)& was a translator of persian literature who translated poems by Hafiz, Rumi and Khayyam. Unlike FitzGerald, the Victorian British poet who delivered a completely free translation of Khayyam, Whinfield made a rather faithful translation of 500 quatrains (1883) by the persian literary giant. Despite his efforts, his translation sometimes fall short of semantic and linguistic adequacy and they needed to be reread, revised and rewritten. So a revisionist approach towards the translations was taken by the present editor and translator who compared the English translation with the persian text and made as many changes as necessary in order to bring the English translations as close as possible to the original text; in some cases, the poems were translated anew.
